Time Management Tips

**USE YOUR PLANNER!**

FIVE STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL TIME MANAGEMENT

  1. Set specific academic and personal goals.

  2. Create a term calendar, record major due dates and events.

  3. Create weekly schedule of your classes, labs, and meetings.

  4. Decide on specific times to work on each course.

  5. Make a to-do list for each day the night before or during breakfast.

The 3 "D"s of Prioritizing

  • Due Date: Do all the assignments that are due the next day first.

  • Difficulty: It's okay if you want to get a few easier assignments out of the way, but don't leave your most difficult assignment for the end of the night when you're too tired to tackle it.

  • Desire: Sometimes you have to fight the urge to do what you want to do until you have finished what you have to do.

TASK ANALYSIS: Breaking Down Big Assignments

  • How much total time do you have?

  • Break assignment into chunks that can be completed in one night.

  • Use a monthly calendar to plan backwards from the due date. Hint: Include a day or two extra for editing and review.

  • Transfer schedule from monthly to weekly calendar.

  • Adjust your schedule as needed.

  • Participate in study groups. Share the load of reading and studying with other students, you will learn better by teaching others.

  • Take notes: outline, mapping or charting to dondense readings.

  • Organize your study materials, including classroom notes, vocab, and previous tests/quizzes.

THINGS TO DO:

  • Manage your time during the test.

  • Arrive early for the test to avoid panic.

  • Answer questions in a strategic order.

  • Answer questions that you know first, to build your confidence.

  • Go back and check your answers.

COMMON TEST TAKING ERRORS:

  • Did not follow directions for test.

  • Did not read questions carefully.

  • Accidentally marked the wrong item or box.

  • Did not know the subject matter very well.

  • Did not understand a question or seek clarification from teacher.

8 WAYS TO REDUCE TEST ANXIETY

  1. Be well prepared for the test, this is the best way to reduce test anxiety.

  2. Try to maintain a positive attitude while preparing for the test and during the test.

  3. Exercise the day before and get a good night's sleep.
